Geertz, Clifford (James)

Antropólogo cultural estadounidense. Es uno de los principales defensores de una vertiente de la antropología que resalta la importancia de los símbolos y la interpretación en la vida social humana. Según Geertz, la cultura es "un sistema de concepciones heredadas que se expresan en formas simbólicas, que sirven para darle significado al mundo y hacerlo comprensible. Sus obras han sido influyentes dentro y fuera de la antropología. Algunas de ellas son La religión en Java (1960), La interpretación de las culturas (1973), Conocimiento local (1983) y El antropólogo como autor (1988). Geertz se refería a su metodología etnográfica como una "descripción densa. Fue docente en la Universidad de Chicago (1960–70), entre otras instituciones, y en 1970 se integró al Instituto de Estudios Avanzados de Princeton, N.J., donde fue nombrado profesor emérito en 2000.
